Sweating, Serving, Cementing & some Soaking

Today was our last day sweating & serving at Doulos. Our team began our morning with breakfast and morning devotions. Each morning we read a passage of Scripture, pray for our day, the work we will do and then we pray over specific kids that still need sponsorship for the next school year. Then we walk over to the school. This has been one of our favorite ways to get immersed in the culture by walking around Jarabacoa. Our team loves it! We noticed this morning that traffic seemed to be a little lighter than normal and the public schools that we pass were closed. When we arrived at Doulos we were told that it’s the Dominican holiday called Festival of the Flowers so all of the schools and many businesses were closed.

Here’s our team every morning walking to Doulos

Once we arrived at school, we got to work on our final day. The campus was pretty empty today because of the holiday, but that did not stop us from our work. Three members of the team worked on finishing up the wall in the new High School classroom while the rest of the team worked on the final project of putting cement inside the Gaga Pit. We really worked well as a team to get these tasks done with excellence with lots of sweating and messy with cement, but we all agreed that we loved every moment of it.

Dave, Joel, Darren & Michael worked on the wall this week
The test of the team worked cement today: Sami, Kelle, Mikey, Roman, Dani, Jen, Karl, Julia, Madeline & Denise

We finished our job of cementing right before lunch. This was a much needed task as the staff said that the Gaga Pit is one of the favorite recess choice but it becomes one big “dust bowl “ when the kids play it. We worked with Leo & Miguel on this project and they were thrilled that we finished. The staff commented how hard our team especially the youth that came to serve. Our FBC team is one of the smaller teams they’ve had, but we accomplished much! Praise God! We give him all the glory
After lunch, our youth kids put on Sports Camp for Doulos. They played Volleyball and Soccer until a major rain soaker (aka “rain”) came through. The rain did feel really good after a hot, messy day of work. We really enjoyed getting to know the kids at Doulos and we shared some Hi Chew candy with our friends during the rain

Then we headed back to our house enjoying the light rain. Then we cleaned up and headed over to the Sawyers house for dinner. We so enjoyed our time with our global missionaries, Jon, Rachel and their kids,

We headed back to the house and did a team debrief of the week and then headed to bed for the night. It’s been a great week.
